Interview of Johnny Holbrom (J-HO) and 66 Degrees

Just4Fun Unlimited recently caught up with Johnny Holbrom, founder and creator of 66 Degree's. We talked about what 66 really is and dug into what is needed to help promote out islands talents. Here's what the man had to say:

J4F: Johnny you and 66 degree’s are an upcoming entity from the island of Guam promoting some entertaining media, can you tell us what 66 degrees is all about?

JH: 66 DEGREES is all about Entertainment and bringing the HARDCORE joy only 66 delivers, to all people, through the premier artists of and related to the sacred MARIANAS ISLANDS.....we've existed tens of thousands of years B.C., our stories and our people shall be REVEALED.... Now is the time....66 DEGREES chillin in de 'ville.

J4F: Why 66 degree’s what the significance, the meaning behind 66 degree’s?

JH: 66 degrees CHILLIN n VIBIN WORLDWIDE....66 degrees FAHRENHIGHt.....in a tank top and zories.....from sunny san deezy, to --> santa barbareezy, thats DEDEDO *SBSK RTSK*...but really Im totally obsessed with mathematics and numbers and my horoscope and GEMINI, so when it came time to come up with the name of the PRODUCTION, I had to throw the dice-->6 6  snake eyez. six / six. JUNE 6th my BIRTHDAY. 1 AM in the morning...thats my hour...D DAY...66. Route 66 would have been so weak and desperate, than out of no where...DEGREES...and i thought...perfect...chill show...chillin temperature....its all right there.... BURRRRiliant!!!

J4F: I recently watched a few episodes from your YouTube channel and found all your work to be very comical, entertaining and informative, what’s the theme behind the videos?

JH: At first, FRESH PRINCE of DEVILLE wit a lil WAYNE'S WORLD,,,,AND THATS not LIL WAYNE...thats WAYNE's WORLD LIke "PARTY TIME...EXCELLENT!!!". thats probably gonna fly over a few young ones...I look up to WILL SMITH and MIKE MYERS...and feel like puttin it out there with that type of comedic, upbeat vibe makes it way more homey, like home your own home, and homey like you're own homey is shooting the vid,,,because ultimately JOHNNY H, is a homey, a bro, J HOMEY...and gonna be puttin it right in your own home, on your t.v., i pod, i phone, android, i mac, laptop, whatever....NOW. world domination through new age media entertainment, utilizing all forms of social media, youtube, web, television, feature films, documentaries, and more TOP SECRET high grades!!!!

J4F: Johnny as you and I both know there are a lot of talented people in the Marianas, musicians, artists, fighters, racers, surfers, etc. A lot of the talent back home can definitely stand toe to toe with the other artists stateside. How do you think or what do you think needs to be done in order to put our artists from Guam on the mainstream of entertainment worldwide?

JH: Yes, there are a lot of talented people in the Marianas, they root in our islands and dream to do big things, the islands can barely contain their huge ambitions. LARRY FRANQUEZ, sponsored by SABIAN CYMBALS, VIC FIRTH, SUNLITE DRUMS, and more....he's the youngest of his brothers and they all play drums, he's been drummin a half century since he could hold drumsticks, left island to pursue his craft and got his masters, and now he jams jazz from new york city to tokyo....world class musicians and he's kickin that beat. TANYA MANIBUSAN worldwide internet sensation, this girls has well over 1 million total views for all of her vids on youtube, there is a ton....you don't know how many positive comments i get from her music vid i put up...., MELCHOR MANIBUSAN fought DREAM (YOKOHAMA arena, TOKYO) against KAWAJIRI   a top 10 world ranked MMA fighter, i was there with tens of thousands watching, FEDOR made a guest appearance, DREAM is the biggest MMA production in JAPAN, and their video production is LIGHT YEARS ahead of UFC!!!! FRANK the CRANK CAMACHO strives toward a goal, to be UFC CHAMPION, born in SAIPAN, he already holds a prestigious honor, A BJJ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, he continues to strive with Lloyd IRVIN the most popular MMA school on the planet, check out his killer blog... http://crankeffect.com ... JOEY Quichocho of MUNGY TOWN AKA mangilao, fabricated an off road rig, went out to da states, entered the tuff truck challenge and almost raced himself into first place and a cover on OFF ROAD magazine. JQ ended up bringing in the winner and another friend to guam for our own race at SMOKIN WHEELZ...main event..... I slammed a GOPRO on the rig, and got the fresh mud splash from the mud run. JOEITO rips it, BOAT BASIN is his home. he recently won a surf tournament here and is a huge inspiration for young surfers on GUAM...I shot all of these artists and have shared little pieces of them with my youtube audience. Besides these artists, i have shot more artists, and their remains even more and more talented artists to shoot. All that being said, there is talent, lots of it, but now we have to show off that talent, not only to guam, but to the world, to all chamorros worldwide and to all other ethnicities, from the u.s. to asia and beyond, but especially the U.S. and asia because of our ties and position at 13*N 144*E. [***FOKAI****ROM...yah bro"] If we have the talent, but no one gets to see it, we lose out on the entertainment and the joy it brings to the people who view it. Now, in order to put our artists from Guam on the mainstream of entertainment worldwide our artists must continue to be their best, and do their best, amongst ourselves and  worldwide competition, either here on Guam or abroad. But that is not all, we need a producer/producers who can capture those stories, those artists and their talents, and give it back to the world in a manner so entertaining and enlightening to bring joy and inspiration to those who view it. In retrospect, we need talented artists doing big things, and we need  talented producers who can bring those big things to the mainstream, but we need even more than that...if we have the talented artists, and the talented producer, and they work well together, than we have something epic....now what we're gonna need is GUAM and the world's support, we need GUAM to sustain our ambitions, not just with moral support but with financial support, and to continue to provide our artists with opportunities to reach our biggest dreams and achieve our goals. That being said, i have ready-to-show six episodes of TV i have produced for GUAM. six 22 minute episodes. t.v. like no one has ever seen in the u.s. or here....a very new style of documentary, reality t.v. It is my art. i want to be that talented producer. if guam can support this vision, we will quicken the pace into mainstream entertainment otherwise, I may have to create my own website to offer these full episodes and other goods, or just slam them up on youtube. youtube pays up to 150 grand a year to their top players.....no, but really i want a guam t.v. show.what ya get on my youtube are just chips of the BOULDER....66 DEGREES compiled two years of footage from all the marianas, singapore, japan, asia, san diego, los angeles of the marianas' premier artist in the mainstream of entertainment,You want fighters...surfers....racers....photographers....musicians...models....beauty pageant contestants....writers*thats graff for yall don't know*...directors *ALEX MUNOZ* in los angeles at the LA FILM FEST reppin guam films on the big screen in HOLLYWOOD ***66 DEGREES. 66 got ENSON'S HOUSE in japan....wakin up with da FOKAI CREW.... RIP Ryan Dunn

Ryan Dunn, one of the stars of MTV's "Jackass," has died in a car crash. He was 34.

NBC Philadelphia reports that Dunn and another passendger died in a 3 a.m crash at Route 322 and New Street in West Goshen Township, Pennsylvania.

The news of the death was confirmed by April Margera, mother of "Jackass" star Bam, in an interview with a local radio show. TMZ also confirmed with Margera.

Dunn posted to Twitter a photo of himself drinking with friends just hours before the crash.

A police report indicated that Dunn was most likely speeding in his 2007 Porsche 911 GT3, which was destroyed in the wreck. "Upon arrival, police located one vehicle in the road and in the woods that was fully engulfed in flames," the report said. "DUI" was not indicated in the report.

So often fearless, Dunn was perhaps best known for his parts in crashing golf carts and placing a toy car, in a condom, up his rectum in the original "Jackass" film. His "Jackass" co-star Johnny Knoxville spoke of his devastation at the news on Twitter.

"Today I lost my brother Ryan Dunn. My heart goes out to his family and his beloved Angie. RIP Ryan , I love you buddy. say.ly/hUnqQQ," he wrote.

“I have not been able to talk with Bam as he is in Arizona but I cannot believe that his friend is dead – I felt like I lost one of my own sons when I heard that Ryan Dunn had died," Margera said. “Ryan was a wonderful person he really was the sweetest and nicest guy - he was like my extra son, everybody loved him. He had a long term girlfriend and she will be absolutely devastated - she has turned off her phone just now. It’s just so sad we cannot believe Ryan has gone - I’m too upset to say anything else just now.”

He will truly be missed by many... RIP friend.

Interview with Myong Hong

("Island Woman" Official Music Video)

J4F: The last time we saw each other was back in 2006, when you photographed for my sister’s wedding in Cerritos and before that was back in the Tarza days. It’s been a really long time! You are now back on Guam , can you tell us why you moved back home?

MH: To be honest, I moved back to be with my son Tumtum.  He moved back to Guam with his mother and although life was good in San Diego for me, being with my boy and being a good father is my number 1 priority in life.

J4F: Myong you have a lot going for you bro, there’s music, art, photography, animation, design…. The list goes on. Among the many trades that you dabble with which is your most favorite and why?

MH: It’ll be tie with wedding photography and music.  I’ve traveled from Costa Rica to New York because clients would fly me out for their wedding.  I get to share their special day and capture people in love all day!  Also with music, I get to share my emotions and connect with people who’s also going through the same thing and enjoy the music that I put out.  Just feels good sharing your world and having people connect with you.

J4F: You are definitely very talented bro can you tell us what keeps you motivated or what keeps you doing all of what you are doing?

MH: I’ll be honest with you.  Peoples response.  Being a Psychology major, I believe that me growing up wanting to impress my parents always gave me motivations to create art to get positive reactions from people.  I would create art just for the satisfaction of them being impressed and that motivated me.  I know many people might not understand my motivation but it’s always worked for me.  I remember when I was in Martial Arts, I would train so hard just to make my instructors proud.

J4F: Music… LOL! There are many talented musicians back home, just like you. What do you think can be done to better promote the talent we have on the island to become more mainstream instead of just local?

MH: Guam needs to be in itunes!  We need to do tours in the states.  We need to make more music videos and put it on youtube. This will give us more exposures and hopefully oneday, a guam artist will be part of mainstream.  Why not?  Hawaii has hadful of artist who made it mainstream.  Jack Johnson, Bruno Mars and even Baba B made it to mainstream.

J4F: “Island woman”(one of my favorites) is one of your new tracks, correct? What was the inspiration and could there be a possible album coming soon?

MH: Here’s the link to the music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pALXfG7esNQ . My inspiration was a Chamorro/Caucasion girl I met in San Diego.  She wrote a poem about the beach and wanted to make a song with it.  I made it for her and then realized how fun and easy that was.  I got excited and made more songs from that momentum.  I am talking to couple of musicians in the Island, Dan and Edgar from DUB to name a few and have plans to make another album.  The last album was about meeting a girl and what emotions were experienced through it.  This album will be about being in a relationship.

J4F: If I remember correctly you hold two black belts, what are they in, how long did or have you been training? Also are there any plans to open a school of your own?

MH: I have Blackbelts in Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do.  I started when I was 5 years old all the way to college.  That’s all I ever did physically.  I always wanted to open up a school since I also enjoyed teaching kids but life just didn’t turn out that way.  I am lucky to have learned about tradition and respect through it but I think having a school is behind me.  I still train lightly but only to stay in shape.

J4F: As you know the theme of my website is Just4Fun… aside from all the things that you stay busy with tell what you do just4fun.

MH: I love to hang out with my little boy at Chuck E Cheese and the beach.  I also like to go dancing from time to time.  I enjoy Saturday hikes around the island as well.

J4F: Obviously my next question is what words of advice can you give people who are interested in the things that you do what tips can you provide them with?

MH: Don’t lose that motivation.  Once you have it don’t linger on it and get it done.  If it seems to appear impossible, erase that out of your mind and believe that you can do it. Of course don’t just believe it then sit around your butt all day.  Act on it.  What is the first thing that needs to be done?  Who can help me? Where can I get some more ideas and feedbacks? Etc.

J4F: What do you have in store for us in the future? Is there anything that we should be looking out for, collaboration, etc?

MH: Definitely collaborations.  I feel that for me to get better I need to learn from people I admire.  Everybody needs a mentor and inspirations.

J4F: Myong for those who want to get more information about the many trades and businesses that you are involved in how can people contact you or where can they go for more information?

MH: I have few websites I would like to share.
www.prodigy-studios.com is where you can see my photography work.
www.myonghong.com is where you can see my artwork
www.youtube.com/myonghong is where you can see my music videos
http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/island-woman/id384773085?i=384773103&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 is where you can download my songs in itunes.
www.facebook.com/myonghong is where you can add me in facebook.
www.weddingvendorsdirectory.com is my online business I have for wedding vendors who wants to add their wedding business on my online wedding listing.

J4F: Finally, any words of wisdom, shout outs or final thoughts?

MH: Be on the path of continuous personal growth and nothing less.

Myong I want to personally thank you for taking time out and chatting with us at Just4Fun, it is really appreciated. I commend you in all that you do and wish you continued success. Like the others who have supported us I want you to know that we have your back. If you need us for anything please don’t hesitate to ask. Ladies and Gentlemen please check out Myongs music, art and photography you definitely won’t be disappointed!

Respect!

Interview with Joe Camacho

J4F: Joe what got you started in MMA?

JC: I got started in MMA back in 1998 when it was called "NHB" (No-Holds-Barred) and how I got into it was rather interesting. I was an active competitor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and I was a Blue Belt at the time so I was in training for two years and being that I was so competitive and jumped into every tournament out there and placed in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, my instructor, Pedro Carvalho at the time, has asked me if I wanted to fight in a "No-Holds-Barred tournament representing BJJ, which meant I would fight more than once. At that time NHB was mainly Discipline vs Discipline or Style vs Style. This was held at the Pomona Fairgrounds and the show was called, Extreme Challenge. Fortunately for me, I won all my matches by KO or TKO. I had three fights and won impressively for being a BJJ fighter.
Word got out quick in the local area and soon after, Terry Trebilecock of "King of the Cage" had approached me and asked me if I wanted to fight in his very first show. This show would be called, "The Inland Empire Classic". Later it was called, "Bas Rutten's KING OF THE CAGE, and then after that KOTC.
Well, that show was a Pancration match. Open hand strikes to the head and closed fist and kicks to the body. It was in a ring and on a tennis court somewhere in Norco, CA. My opponent was none other than Joe Stevenson. Well, I lost that match. Joe Stevenson finished me with a triangle choke. Joe slapped the triangle choke and instead of trying to escape it, I chose to punch his face and ribs and before I knew it, I was tapping out.
I was so upset with myself for getting caught doing something so stupid. I had drilled and drilled and drilled that escape and instead of sticking to the plan of escape, I chose to punch him and I eventually got choked.
After that, I wanted to fight again because I was mad at myself and I knew I could do better. Months later, I did and I fought a Joe Steven teammate, Al Garza and the show would be the very first "Gladiator Challenge". I won that fight via armbar and the feeling of victory was so great that I wanted to do it again and again and again and so on....and that's how my career started.

J4F: Joe what motivates and inspires you to train hard?

JC: What motivates me to train hard is usually my opponent. I never under estimate my opponents. I always fight names or very tough opponents that have fought defeated other tough guys with names. That's how I built my career, by pound for pound, name vs name, skilled vs skilled fights that meant something. I never fought chumps or "tomatoe cans" to pad my record like others did.
I earned my stripes fighting "real fighters", not "paper fighters" who only look good on paper. So my opponent usually motivates me to train hard because I know he knows he's in for a war with me and he is training twice as hard as me to beat me, so I have to step it up even harder and push myself to more than he.
Another motivation that inspires me are the fans. They motivate me to go out there and put on the best performance I can because they want to see me victorious with my hand raised in the end. Man, the energy I get from the fans when my name is announced moments before I step into the cage or when my intro song kicks in is intense. I love that feeling and I know I will miss that feeling when I retire.

J4F: Joe what is your favorite submission?

JC:  I really don't have a favorite submission. I like them all because they all work together hand in hand in my transitions for set-ups or flow of movement to advance for a dominant position to catch my opponent one. But there is one submission that I really like and it's really not a "submission hold" persay but it can submit you when applied right and that's submitting you with my pressure. Whether on side control, full mount or back mount, submitting you with applied pressure is so cool and fun because it tells me positioning is right and on point. I'm a 155 pounder and when I apply my pressure on you, I feel like 1000 pounds. It's magnificent...haha I love submitting everyone with pressure alone because with just my pressure, the opponent is in a world of pain and not only does he have to deal with my submission attacks, but he has to deal with my pressure as well. To add, submitting your opponent like that is rather embarrassing too....haha Opponents or training partners usually can't believe they've just been tapped out by a "side mount"....haha You gotta try it, it's fun.

J4F: Joe you’ve been to Guam to compete in MMA what did you think about the island?

JC: Yes, I've been to Guam many times and let me just tell you, Guam is a beautiful place. I love Guam. I actually miss Guam. Before I retire, I want to give one last performance for the Chamorro people of Guam and give them a chance to see in action again before I hang up the gloves. But yeah man, Guam is a lovely place to be. The people are hospitable and very friendly. They always greet you as if they've known you for years. Yeah, I miss Guam. I want to go back. That's my home away from home...haha!

J4F: You’re an active competitor in the MMA scene as well as an instructor at the UFC training center. When you have time, what do you like to do Just4Fun?

JC: Well, when I'm not fighting/competing or training for a fight/competition or preparing someone for a fight/competition or even coaching someone at a fight or jiu-jitsu match, I like to go for stroll on the riverbed on my beach cruiser. I love my new bike...haha its hella fun just cruising and enjoying the scenery as I ride along the wash to the beach or ride along a bike route from city to city.
I also like going to the movies, drawing, computer graphics, listening to music, hanging out with friends, eating at a cool restaurants, and lots of quality time with my girl.

J4F: For us fans what should we be looking out for… any new projects or events coming soon?

JC: I really have no fights coming up because I'm going through some body repair with injuries from my last fight with Joe Boxer, so right now I have nothing planned but I am hoping to get a fight lined up for maybe July, in hopes my injuries are all healed up.

As far as projects though, I am working on a few art projects that will jump start some of my ideas that I've been sitting on for a while. I can't say much but in time you will see some cool stuff coming soon by me. Stay tuned!...haha

J4F: Joe what words of advice would you give people who have been inspired by you and want to follow in your footsteps?

JC: The advice I give everyone is this, if you're a fighter or want to become one, no matter who you are, what you've done, or how many fights you've had, always, always, and always remain humble! A person can go a long way with humility. Being humble is key!

J4F: Finally Joe do you have final words or shout-outs?

JC: I'd like to thank all my sponsors and friends, family and loved ones and fans for all of your great support. I wouldn't be where I'm at if it wasn't for all of you. And thank you for this opportunity to be interviewed. Thank you very much. God Bless you all.

Joe Camacho

Interview with Danny and Apparatus Brand

J4F: Danny not too many people know about the Apparatus Brand and its mission, can you please clarify it for us?

Appa:This is our mission statement:

everyone digs a fresh tee shirt. from the beach, to the tournament, to a bbq or just to

represent-- we recognize what the people want and apparatus is here to deliver.

while designing as a hobby since 2002, apparatus came about in 2006 and naturally fell into its own distinctive style. we come from a simplistic yet bold background. for us, less is more. apparatus is about representing island culture, brazilian jiu-jitsu and reggae as a lifestyle. our mission is simple: create clothing that embodies who we are and what we represent, all the while remembering our roots. always keeping it fresh, simple, and forever humble, the apparatus familia.

J4F: What exactly does Apparatus Brand stand for?

Appa: we stand for positivity we stand for people who are inspired. it’s not so much the brand but the movement behind the brand. the family, the sponsored, the culture, and the mission we represent. that is whats important to me. the name is an identifier, but themovement is more important.

J4F: Apparatus Brand is a hot, popular, up and coming clothing brand. I have seen many people sporting your tees and stickers; I even have a few shirts and stickers. What can you say about that? Did you expect the brand to grow as quick as it has?

Appa: thank you for the belief. to me, the brand has a lot of work to do. to me, it’s still very small but i believe it will get there with a lot of hard work, passion and dedication. this is my passion and a lifestyle i wanted to pursue for a very longtime, but with everything, life comes into play. but i am proud to say that today, i can finally pursue my dream. AppA will be here for a very longtime.

J4F: Danny there is stiff competition out there in regards to clothing brands. Most especially with competing island brands, what makes Apparatus Brand stick out?

Appa: very true. there are so many brands out there that i personally love as well. i guess with AppA, we try to be original with our designs and messages as much as we can, a lot of folks say that there is no originality today, but i disagree, we try to put a little of “us” into every design, into every tee. and i think folks can respect that. i have much respect for all the local brands out there doing they’re thing. they believe in their product and that’s all you need, is belief.

J4F: Who does Apparatus Brand cater to… is it generally for the island peeps or are we talking worldwide?

Appa: we cater to everyone, to me, if a person thinks the design is fresh, he/she will wear it no matter what. but we are definitely inspired by our island life, brazilian-jiu jitsu, and reggae as a lifestyle. thats what we love and represent.

J4F: Does Appa sponsor anyone at this time and how would those looking for

sponsorship get noticed?

NY Open Leve & Open Class Champion
Brasileiro Leve Champion
Purple Belt;
2010 Worlds Leve & Open Class Champion

J4F: Tracey you train with some of the greats like Lloyd Irvin and Mike Fowler what do you have to say about them?

Tracey: It's an honor to train under someone like Master Lloyd and to have such great training partners/idols like Mike Fowler, JT Torres, Jimmy Harbison, Willie Leonard...to name a few. I met Mike Fowler through jiu jitsu, he introduced me to Master Lloyd and I never looked back. These names that I have mentioned are hard working people on the jiu jistu world. They train like champions to become champions. Enough Said....

J4F: What does jiu jitsu mean to you, what do you love the most about BJJ?

Tracey: Jiu Jitsu to me means everything, it's what I do. I love the competitive aspect of it, knowing that when you step on the mat with your opponent, it's show time. Your teammates and coaches have helped you prepare for that moment and it’s your time to shine.

J4F: There are many more women training BJJ because of your accomplishments what words of advice do you have for them to continue following their goals and staying motivated?

Tracey: Words of advice never give up and give it your all!! You will come across hardships and bumps in your road that you think will ruin everything. Keep your head high and train harder. Nobody said it would be easy...Every time you train; train like it's a match! No time for bs!

J4F: Who do you look up to and who are your favorite MMA or BJJ stars?

Tracey: I look up to a lot of people, Master Lloyd, Mike Fowler, Master Donnie, JT Torres and many more from Team Lloyd Irvin. My teammates are my favorite BJJ stars! As for MMA, Brandon and Kerry Vera!!

J4F: In your opinion what would attract more women into the world of BJJ and MMA?

Tracey: In my opinion, the only thing that can attract more women to these sports is women! When younger girls/women have idols and starts they can look up to, I think it's easier for them to do the sport. They see that women do it too and are good at it! It gives them motivation.

J4F: My website is all about what people love to do on their spare time, aside from BJJ what do you do Just4Fun?

Tracey: Just4Fun I like to go to the beach, anything to do with the ocean and outdoors! I also enjoy watching jiu jitsu videos! Who doesn't?!

Prepare for Zombie Apocalypse??

Social Media: Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse

This is no joke everyone... This is a serious article that was published on a government website. This either means that the government is warning us about something that they fucked up on or they are working on something that may cause such an epidemic, you decide.

The following was originally posted on CDC Public Health Matters Blog on May 16th, 2011 by Ali S. Khan.

There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.

A Brief History of Zombies
We’ve all seen at least one movie about flesh-eating zombies taking over (my personal favorite is Resident Evil), but where do zombies come from and why do they love eating brains so much? The word zombie comes from Haitian and New Orleans voodoo origins. Although its meaning has changed slightly over the years, it refers to a human corpse mysteriously reanimated to serve the undead. Through ancient voodoo and folk-lore traditions, shows like the Walking Dead were born.

In movies, shows, and literature, zombies are often depicted as being created by an infectious virus, which is passed on via bites and contact with bodily fluids. Harvard psychiatrist Steven Schoolman wrote a (fictional) medical paper on the zombies presented in Night of the living dead and refers to the condition as Ataxic Neurodegenerative Satiety Deficiency Syndrome caused by an infectious agent. The Zombie survival guide identifies the cause of zombies as a virus called solanum. Other zombie origins shown in films include radiation from a destroyed NASA Venus probe (as in Night of the living dead, as well as mutations of existing conditions such as prions, mad cow-disease, measles and rabies.

The rise of zombies in pop culture has given credence to the idea that a zombie apocalypse could happen. In such a scenario zombies would take over entire countries, roaming city streets eating anything living that got in their way. The proliferation of this idea has led many people to wonder “How do I prepare for a zombie apocalypse?”

Well, we’re here to answer that question for you, and hopefully share a few tips about preparing for real emergencies too!

Better Safe than Sorry

So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen? First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house. This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored). Below are a few items you should include in your kit, for a full list visit the CDC Emergency page.

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Food (stock up on non-perishable items that you eat regularly)
  • Medications (this includes prescription and non-prescription meds)
  • Tools and Supplies (utility knife, duct tape, battery powered radio, etc.)
  • Sanitation and Hygiene (household bleach, soap, towels, etc.)
  • Clothing and Bedding (a change of clothes for each family member and blankets)
  • Important documents (copies of your driver’s license, passport, and birth certificate to name a few)
  • First Aid supplies (although you’re a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane.

Once you’ve made your emergency kit, you should sit down with your family and come up with an emergency plan. This includes where you would go and who you would call if zombies started appearing outside your door step. You can also implement this plan if there is a flood, earthquake, or other emergency.

  1. Identify the types of emergencies that are possible in your area. Besides a zombie apocalypse, this may include floods, tornadoes, or earthquakes. If you are unsure contact your local Red Cross chapter for more information.
  2. Pick a meeting place for your family to regroup in case zombies invade your home…or your town evacuates because of a hurricane. Pick one place right outside your home for sudden emergencies and one place outside of your neighborhood in case you are unable to return home right away.
  3. Identify your emergency contacts. Make a list of local contacts like the police, fire department, and your local zombie response team. Also identify an out-of-state contact that you can call during an emergency to let the rest of your family know you are ok.
  4. Plan your evacuation route. When zombies are hungry they won’t stop until they get food (i.e., brains), which means you need to get out of town fast! Plan where you would go and multiple routes you would take ahead of time so that the flesh eaters don’t have a chance! This is also helpful when natural disasters strike and you have to take shelter fast.

Never Fear – CDC is Ready

If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine). It’s likely that an investigation of this scenario would seek to accomplish several goals: determine the cause of the illness, the source of the infection/virus/toxin, learn how it is transmitted and how readily it is spread, how to break the cycle of transmission and thus prevent further cases, and how patients can best be treated. Not only would scientists be working to identify the cause and cure of the zombie outbreak, but CDC and other federal agencies would send medical teams and first responders to help those in affected areas (I will be volunteering the young nameless disease detectives for the field work).
